Suitability of wheat varieties for organic farming systems
Zlatina Uhr, Grigori Ivanov, Ginka Rachovska
Abstract: Choosing the right sorts of wheat is one of the key factors for achieving good results in organic farming. Wheat varieties suitable for organic farming differ in a number of key features compared to those adapted to the conventional system. Four groups of traits are identified as critical in terms of differences between "conventional" and "organic" wheat varieties - effective nutrient utilization, competitive weed control, resistance to disease and pests, and stability in yield and quality.
