40 years of scientific floriculture department and 85 years of research in the field of ornamental plants in Bulgaria

Abstract: An overview is presented of the historical development, achievements and trends in оrnamental plants research in Bulgaria during the past 85 years. Professor Bistra Atanasova noted, that the Institute of Ornamental and Medicinal Plants with its previous structures, is the cradle of the Bulgarian floriculture science. Among the institute’s primary goals is a focus on scientific and applied activity: introduction in the production of Bulgarian varieties of flowers and new technologies for cultivation of flower crops; production of non-virus planting material in vitro; promotion of Bulgarian flower varieties; seminars and open days; preparation of projects for landscaping; advisory services; participation in specialized flower exhibitions and more.
