Breeding of short-stemmed inbred lines of rye (Secale cereale L.)
Nadia Daskalova, Penko Spetsov
Резюме: Variation in plant height, heading date, seed number and weight in isolated spike were analyzed in two consecutive generations (S3 and S4 plants), obtained after short-stemmed selection in five rye populations. The self-fertility was estimated by comparison the bagged seed number to grains in spike under open pollination, in percent. Of the 18 offsprings studied in the S4 generation, eight ryes (44.4%) showed very high seedset under the isolator (95.4-129%). The highest stem of 134 cm belonged to a form №10-1, constituting the most distant cluster. Three progenies emerged as perspective lines, two of which had low stem (99-101 cm), and the third one No.17-2 formed the largest and heaviest seeds. Their low coefficients of variation implied the rapid production of lowstatured and self-fertile inbred rye lines.
